BGP Details & Implementation: Part 1

This course provides a complete and practical overview of BGP peering establishment, optimization, security, and troubleshooting. It is designed for learners who want to understand how BGP neighbor relationships are formed, how they can be fine-tuned for different network designs, and how common peering issues can be identified and resolved. Throughout the course, you will learn the key differences between iBGP and eBGP peering, including how each type of peer relationship behaves and where it is commonly used. The training also covers basic BGP authentication, helping learners understand how to secure BGP sessions and prevent unauthorized peer connections. You will explore important BGP peering features such as eBGP Multihop, Update-Source, and Disable-Connected Check. These topics help explain how BGP sessions can be established in more flexible designs, including scenarios where peers are not directly connected or where loopback interfaces are used for stable peering. The course also explains BGP peering sanity checks, neighbor states, and common troubleshooting methods. Learners will understand how to recognize different BGP session states, identify configuration or reachability problems, and resolve common issues that prevent successful neighbor formation. Additional topics include BGP peering collisions and methods to avoid them, as well as using TTL Security to help protect BGP infrastructure against denial-of-service attacks. The course also covers fast neighbor failure detection using failover mechanisms, timer adjustments, and BFD integration to improve convergence and reduce downtime. By the end of this course, learners will have a strong understanding of how to configure, secure, optimize, and troubleshoot BGP peering relationships in enterprise and service provider network environments.

Keith started his networking career as customer service representative at Cisco Systems in 1996. His desire to learn more soon led him to a position as a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineer on the “Dial-Access” team, and within six months he had obtained his Dial-ISP CCIE. He later became a network consulting engineer and obtained his CCNA certification while teaching the technologies to Cisco employees during his lunch breaks. Keith was the first instructor on Cisco’s TAC Training team, where he taught a wide range of internetworking topics and later developed and taught other courses such as routing protocols, LAN switching, MPLS, 802.1x, and CCNA. After almost 17 years with Cisco, Keith joined a small startup and focused on 802.11 Wi-Fi technologies, during which time he obtained his CWNA certification. He is now very happy to be working as an instructor for Routing & Switching. Keith lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, son, and daughter. When he is not teaching Bootcamps, Keith can be found at home with his family, reading, or working in the yard.
