BGP Details & Implementation: Part 2

This course provides a detailed introduction to BGP peering, helping learners build a strong understanding of both foundational and advanced BGP concepts. It is designed for networking professionals and certification candidates who want to understand how BGP peer relationships are formed, maintained, secured, and troubleshot in real network environments. Throughout the course, you will learn the key differences between internal BGP, known as iBGP, and external BGP, known as eBGP. The training explains how BGP neighbors communicate, how peering sessions are established, and what requirements must be met for successful BGP connectivity. You will also explore important BGP peering techniques such as eBGP Multihop, which allows BGP sessions to be formed between routers that are not directly connected. The course also covers methods for securing BGP connections and protecting routing infrastructure from common threats, including denial-of-service attacks and unauthorized access attempts. In addition, learners will gain practical troubleshooting skills for identifying and resolving common BGP peering issues, such as neighbor relationship failures, incorrect configurations, reachability problems, and session instability. The course also explains how to improve failure detection and response so networks can recover more quickly when routing problems occur. By the end of this course, learners will have the practical knowledge needed to configure, secure, manage, and troubleshoot BGP peering relationships effectively in enterprise and service provider networks.

Keith started his networking career as customer service representative at Cisco Systems in 1996. His desire to learn more soon led him to a position as a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineer on the “Dial-Access” team, and within six months he had obtained his Dial-ISP CCIE. He later became a network consulting engineer and obtained his CCNA certification while teaching the technologies to Cisco employees during his lunch breaks. Keith was the first instructor on Cisco’s TAC Training team, where he taught a wide range of internetworking topics and later developed and taught other courses such as routing protocols, LAN switching, MPLS, 802.1x, and CCNA. After almost 17 years with Cisco, Keith joined a small startup and focused on 802.11 Wi-Fi technologies, during which time he obtained his CWNA certification. He is now very happy to be working as an instructor for Routing & Switching. Keith lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, son, and daughter. When he is not teaching Bootcamps, Keith can be found at home with his family, reading, or working in the yard.
