BGP Details & Implementation: Part 3
This course is the third and final part of a three-part training series covering Border Gateway Protocol, commonly known as BGP, for CCNP and CCIE Routing and Switching learners. It is designed for candidates preparing for the CCNP ROUTE exam or the CCIE Routing and Switching certification, as well as network professionals who want to build a deeper understanding of advanced BGP concepts. The course focuses on advanced BGP design, scalability, path control, aggregation, filtering, and route stability techniques used in enterprise and service provider networks. Learners will begin by exploring how to overcome the requirement for full-mesh iBGP topologies using Route Reflectors and Confederations. These concepts help simplify large BGP deployments and improve scalability in complex network environments. You will also learn about iBGP path manipulation techniques using attributes such as Weight and Local Preference. These topics help learners understand how BGP routing decisions can be influenced to control traffic flow more effectively. The course also covers BGP prefix aggregation and related attributes, including Atomic Aggregate and Aggregator. These concepts are important for reducing routing table size, summarizing routes, and improving overall routing efficiency. In addition, learners will study multiple BGP filtering techniques, including the use of standard and extended ACLs, Prefix Lists, Route Maps, and AS-Path Access Lists. The course also introduces regular expressions as they relate to AS-Path filtering, helping learners understand how to match and control BGP route advertisements more precisely. Finally, the course explains BGP Route Dampening, a feature used to reduce the impact of unstable or frequently changing routes. By the end of this course, learners will have a strong understanding of advanced BGP behavior, scalability methods, routing policy control, filtering techniques, and route stability mechanisms required for CCNP and CCIE-level networking.

Course Instructor
Keith started his networking career as customer service representative at Cisco Systems in 1996. His desire to learn more soon led him to a position as a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineer on the “Dial-Access” team, and within six months he had obtained his Dial-ISP CCIE. He later became a network consulting engineer and obtained his CCNA certification while teaching the technologies to Cisco employees during his lunch breaks. Keith was the first instructor on Cisco’s TAC Training team, where he taught a wide range of internetworking topics and later developed and taught other courses such as routing protocols, LAN switching, MPLS, 802.1x, and CCNA. After almost 17 years with Cisco, Keith joined a small startup and focused on 802.11 Wi-Fi technologies, during which time he obtained his CWNA certification. He is now very happy to be working with as an instructor for Routing & Switching. Keith lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, son, and daughter. When he is not teaching Bootcamps, Keith can be found at home with his family, reading, or working in the yard.
