Router/Switch Security

Preparing for Cisco’s CCENT or CCNA Routing and Switching certifications can feel challenging because of the wide range of topics learners are expected to understand. In addition to the major areas of routing and switching, there are many important security-related concepts that do not always fit clearly into either category but are still essential for the exam and for real-world network administration. This course brings those security topics together into one focused video series, making it easier for CCENT and CCNA Routing and Switching candidates to study them in a structured way. The training is designed to help learners understand how basic security features are used to protect Cisco networks, control access, reduce risk, and strengthen device-level security. Throughout the course, you will learn about Standard and Extended Access Lists, including both the theory behind them and how they are configured on Cisco devices. You will also explore Port Security, methods for protecting access to the Cisco IOS command-line interface, and Layer 2 protection features such as BPDU Guard and Root Guard. The course also explains how to use the `log` and `log-input` keywords with Access Lists for better visibility into network traffic. You will learn about TCP and UDP Small Servers, what they are, how they could be misused in network attacks, and how to disable them to improve security. Network Address Translation, also known as NAT, is also covered, along with several additional security concepts that are important for certification preparation. By the end of this course, learners will have a stronger understanding of the security technologies and configuration practices needed for Cisco CCENT and CCNA Routing and Switching exams, as well as practical knowledge that can be applied in real networking environments.

Keith started his networking career as customer service representative at Cisco Systems in 1996. His desire to learn more soon led him to a position as a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineer on the “Dial-Access” team, and within six months he had obtained his Dial-ISP CCIE. He later became a network consulting engineer and obtained his CCNA certification while teaching the technologies to Cisco employees during his lunch breaks. Keith was the first instructor on Cisco’s TAC Training team, where he taught a wide range of internetworking topics and later developed and taught other courses such as routing protocols, LAN switching, MPLS, 802.1x, and CCNA. After almost 17 years with Cisco, Keith joined a small startup and focused on 802.11 Wi-Fi technologies, during which time he obtained his CWNA certification. He is now very happy to be working with as an instructor for Routing & Switching. Keith lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, son, and daughter. When he is not teaching Bootcamps, Keith can be found at home with his family, reading, or working in the yard.
