Introduction to IPv6
This course provides a detailed introduction to IPv6 by building on the learner’s existing understanding of IPv4 technologies. It is designed to help networking professionals and certification candidates understand how IPv6 works, how it differs from IPv4, and how it is implemented in Cisco IOS environments. Throughout the course, you will explore the IPv6 addressing structure and learn about important address types and assignment methods. Topics include Link-Local addressing, Stateless Address Autoconfiguration, Stateless DHCP, and DHCPv6. These concepts help learners understand how IPv6 devices identify themselves, communicate on local links, and receive addressing information in modern networks. The course also explains the major changes made to ICMP in IPv6 and the supporting technologies that replace traditional broadcast behavior. You will learn how IPv6 handles neighbor discovery, address resolution, and network communication without relying on broadcasting. In addition, the course covers how common routing protocols operate with IPv6, including RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP. Learners will understand the key changes required for IPv6 routing and the basic implementation steps needed on Cisco IOS devices. The training also introduces several IPv6 transition mechanisms used to support migration from IPv4 to IPv6. These include GRE, 6to4, ISATAP, DMVPN, and MPLS 6PE/6VPE.
