IPv4 Addressing & Subnetting

Whether you are preparing for the Cisco CCNA certification or simply want to refresh your understanding of IPv4 addressing and subnetting, this course provides a clear and structured learning path. It is designed to help learners build confidence in one of the most important foundations of networking. The course begins with a look at the early history of ARPANET and explains why TCP/IP was originally developed. This background helps learners understand how modern IP networking evolved and why addressing became such an important part of network communication. From there, the course explains the development of IP addressing, starting from the early method where only the first byte was treated as the network portion. Learners will then move into classful addressing, subnetting, Variable Length Subnet Masking, commonly known as VLSM, and Classless Inter-Domain Routing, also known as CIDR. The training also covers IPv4 route summarization and supernetting, helping learners understand how networks can be grouped, simplified, and represented more efficiently in routing tables. As an added benefit, the course includes multiple quiz slides with answers. These quizzes allow learners to pause the videos, test their understanding, and then check their responses before moving forward. By the end of this course, learners will have a stronger understanding of IPv4 addressing, subnetting, summarization, and the key concepts needed for CCNA preparation and real-world networking.

Course Instructor

Keith started his networking career as customer service representative at Cisco Systems in 1996. His desire to learn more soon led him to a position as a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineer on the “Dial-Access” team, and within six months he had obtained his Dial-ISP CCIE. He later became a network consulting engineer and obtained his CCNA certification while teaching the technologies to Cisco employees during his lunch breaks. Keith was the first instructor on Cisco’s TAC Training team, where he taught a wide range of internetworking topics and later developed and taught other courses such as routing protocols, LAN switching, MPLS, 802.1x, and CCNA. After almost 17 years with Cisco, Keith joined a small startup and focused on 802.11 Wi-Fi technologies, during which time he obtained his CWNA certification. He is now very happy to be working with as an instructor for Routing & Switching. Keith lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, son, and daughter. When he is not teaching Bootcamps, Keith can be found at home with his family, reading, or working in the yard.
