L3 Multicast with PIM Sparse-Mode

This course is designed as a follow-up to the Layer 2 Multicast course and assumes that learners already have a basic understanding of the related multicast concepts. Learners should have either completed the earlier L2 Multicast training or gained equivalent knowledge through previous study or hands-on experience. The course begins with a brief overview of how multicast is used in data networks and why it is important for efficiently delivering traffic to multiple receivers. It then provides a short recap of key foundational topics such as IGMP and MLDP, helping learners refresh the concepts needed before moving into more advanced Layer 3 multicast technologies. From there, the course takes a deeper look at Protocol Independent Multicast, commonly known as PIM, with a focus on Sparse Mode operation. You will learn how PIM Sparse Mode works, how multicast distribution trees are built, and how routers manage multicast traffic across routed networks. The training covers important PIM topics such as the PIM state machine, different PIM message types, and the PIM registration process. It also explains the role of PIM Designated Routers and Designated Forwarders, helping learners understand how multicast forwarding decisions are made in different network scenarios. The course concludes by explaining how to implement dynamic PIM Rendezvous Point discovery in a network. Learners will explore both Auto-RP and PIM-BSR features and understand how these mechanisms help automate RP discovery and simplify multicast deployment. By the end of this course, learners will have a stronger understanding of Layer 3 multicast operation, PIM Sparse Mode behavior, and the practical methods used to deploy multicast routing in modern networks.

Course Instructor

Keith started his networking career as customer service representative at Cisco Systems in 1996. His desire to learn more soon led him to a position as a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineer on the “Dial-Access” team, and within six months he had obtained his Dial-ISP CCIE. He later became a network consulting engineer and obtained his CCNA certification while teaching the technologies to Cisco employees during his lunch breaks. Keith was the first instructor on Cisco’s TAC Training team, where he taught a wide range of internetworking topics and later developed and taught other courses such as routing protocols, LAN switching, MPLS, 802.1x, and CCNA. After almost 17 years with Cisco, Keith joined a small startup and focused on 802.11 Wi-Fi technologies, during which time he obtained his CWNA certification. He is now very happy to be working as an instructor for Routing & Switching. Keith lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, son, and daughter. When he is not teaching Bootcamps, Keith can be found at home with his family, reading, or working in the yard.
