Layer-2 Multicast

This course is designed as a foundational starting point for learners who want to begin understanding IP Multicast technology. It is ideal for those who are new to multicast and want a clear explanation of how multicast works, where it is used, and how it differs from other packet delivery methods in modern networks. The course begins with an overview of the differences between unicast, broadcast, and multicast traffic distribution. You will learn how multicast allows data, voice, or video traffic to be efficiently delivered to multiple receivers without sending separate copies of the same traffic to each destination. The training also explains common use cases where multicast is valuable, such as streaming media, real-time applications, financial data feeds, and large-scale network services. As you progress, you will learn how to identify both IPv4 and IPv6 multicast addresses and understand how these addresses are mapped to Layer 2 destination MAC addresses. This helps learners connect multicast addressing concepts across different layers of the network. The course also covers key multicast control protocols, including IPv4 IGMP and IPv6 MLDP. You will explore the purpose of IGMP and understand the differences between IGMPv1, IGMPv2, and IGMPv3 through explanations, packet traces, and debug outputs. In addition, the course includes discussions and lab demonstrations on important multicast features such as IGMP Snooping, MLDP Snooping, IGMP Filtering, and PIM Snooping. These topics help learners understand how switches and routers manage multicast traffic efficiently and prevent unnecessary flooding within the network. By the end of this course, learners will have a strong foundation in IP Multicast concepts, addressing, protocol behavior, and practical Layer 2 multicast control mechanisms.

Keith started his networking career as customer service representative at Cisco Systems in 1996. His desire to learn more soon led him to a position as a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineer on the “Dial-Access” team, and within six months he had obtained his Dial-ISP CCIE. He later became a network consulting engineer and obtained his CCNA certification while teaching the technologies to Cisco employees during his lunch breaks. Keith was the first instructor on Cisco’s TAC Training team, where he taught a wide range of internetworking topics and later developed and taught other courses such as routing protocols, LAN switching, MPLS, 802.1x, and CCNA. After almost 17 years with Cisco, Keith joined a small startup and focused on 802.11 Wi-Fi technologies, during which time he obtained his CWNA certification. He is now very happy to be working with as an instructor for Routing & Switching. Keith lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, son, and daughter. When he is not teaching Bootcamps, Keith can be found at home with his family, reading, or working in the yard.
