Understanding Common Network Applications

A strong understanding of commonly used network applications is essential for anyone preparing for a Cisco certification or planning to build a career as a Network Administrator. This course is designed especially for learners preparing for the ICND1, also known as CCENT, exam and is ideal for those who have little or no prior experience with basic network applications and how they operate in real-world environments. Throughout this course, you will learn the core concepts behind important networking services and application types. The training begins with an overview of TCP and UDP, including how they operate, where they are used, and the key differences between connection-oriented and connectionless communication. You will also explore how DNS works and why it is important for translating domain names into IP addresses. The course explains different application models, including peer-to-peer, client-server, standalone, and web-based applications, helping you understand how devices and users interact across a network. You will also learn how email communication works, including the roles and differences between SMTP, POP3, and IMAP. In addition, the course covers the fundamentals of web browsing, including how websites are accessed and the difference between HTTP and HTML. You will also gain an understanding of Telnet, why it is used for remote access, and how it functions within a network environment. This course provides a clear foundation for learners who want to understand essential network applications before moving deeper into Cisco networking concepts and certification preparation.

Course Instructor

Keith started his networking career as customer service representative at Cisco Systems in 1996. His desire to learn more soon led him to a position as a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineer on the “Dial-Access” team, and within six months he had obtained his Dial-ISP CCIE. He later became a network consulting engineer and obtained his CCNA certification while teaching the technologies to Cisco employees during his lunch breaks. Keith was the first instructor on Cisco’s TAC Training team, where he taught a wide range of internetworking topics and later developed and taught other courses such as routing protocols, LAN switching, MPLS, 802.1x, and CCNA. After almost 17 years with Cisco, Keith joined a small startup and focused on 802.11 Wi-Fi technologies, during which time he obtained his CWNA certification. He is now very happy to be working as an instructor for Routing & Switching. Keith lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, son, and daughter. When he is not teaching Bootcamps, Keith can be found at home with his family, reading, or working in the yard.
