Virtualization Fundamentals

Virtualization has become a core technology in modern IT environments. From servers and desktops to routers, firewalls, and cloud platforms, organizations increasingly rely on virtualization to improve efficiency, flexibility, and resource utilization. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to virtualization and the key concepts behind it. Learners will begin by understanding the challenges virtualization was designed to solve and how it enables multiple computing environments to run on shared hardware. The course explores important topics such as virtual machines, hypervisors, virtual switches, and the role virtualization plays in today's data centers and cloud environments. Learners will also examine the differences between Type-1 and Type-2 hypervisors, how virtual switches are used to segment and manage virtual machine traffic, and the factors to consider when choosing between cloud-hosted and on-premises virtual infrastructure. In addition, the course includes practical demonstrations showing how virtualization can be explored using freely available Type-2 hypervisors and guest operating systems. This course is ideal for anyone new to virtualization who wants to build a strong foundation in virtual infrastructure technologies and understand how they are used in modern IT environments.

Course Instructor

Keith started his networking career as customer service representative at Cisco Systems in 1996. His desire to learn more soon led him to a position as a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineer on the “Dial-Access” team, and within six months he had obtained his Dial-ISP CCIE. He later became a network consulting engineer and obtained his CCNA certification while teaching the technologies to Cisco employees during his lunch breaks. Keith was the first instructor on Cisco’s TAC Training team, where he taught a wide range of internetworking topics and later developed and taught other courses such as routing protocols, LAN switching, MPLS, 802.1x, and CCNA. After almost 17 years with Cisco, Keith joined a small startup and focused on 802.11 Wi-Fi technologies, during which time he obtained his CWNA certification. He is now very happy to be working with as an instructor for Routing & Switching. Keith lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, son, and daughter. When he is not teaching Bootcamps, Keith can be found at home with his family, reading, or working in the yard.
